We’re All Mad Here…

Alice in Wonderland, work in progress, Mad Hatter

I’ve been dying to share this work in progress! I’m having a lot of fun playing with it and watching it evolve. I still have work to do on every aspect of it, the faces, bodies, background… But I’m enjoying taking my time with it.

It is a portrait of me and my best friend, who is also an artist. It’s based off of an Alice in Wonderland doodle from my sketchbook that kept growing more and more into a work of its own…

Set Me Free

Set Me FreeEarlier this year I was involved in a group show. As part of the show, we were asked to create a 12″ x 12″ image around the theme: Set Free.

This became a traumatizing assignment for me because I had been feeling very trapped, stuck, immobile and longing to set myself free for the last few years… It was, and still is to some degree, difficult for me to wrap my head around what freedom would look or feel like! So, I decided to do a self-portrait that captured my anxiety instead, and my need to be set free. I may allow myself the freedom to play around a bit more with the images floating over my head. The shapes represent the logistics and puzzles that I need to sort out…

Life Without…

Life without art, life without love …is nothing.  Another collaborative sketch between me and Scottish artist Sean Fleming, done while I was traveling. This one I’m now adding color to and will post another pic when it’s done.  I love the push and pull of working together on a piece. Looking forward to doing more.

Life in the Wild… A Collaboration

I just got back from a heart warming journey to Scotland. I spent a whole week with my best friend, drawing, painting, visiting galleries and exploring the land.  We originally met through an online art group. It’s amazing what can happen in two years, even with 6000 miles in between. And even more so, considering these terrible iPad portraits I did of him, before we ever exchanged words… Haha 😛 Thankfully, I’ve done more flattering work since…

Life in the WIld is a collaborative sketch that we worked on while I was visiting. I altered the color digitally, it was graphite… I’ll post some more of our collaborative work and perhaps a photo or two later this week…

You can see more of his work on Facebook:

It’s Sunday, so I must confess my Ed Sheeran addiction…

pencil drawing ed sheeran fan artBefore I assault you with my backlog of dark, moody paintings, I thought I’d ease you into things with something a bit more peaceful. This is Ed Sheeran, a singer/songwriter from the UK, who is fairly new to the music scene. I find him inspiring because he is a driven, self-made (musical) artist who’s seen his efforts pay off. His music is mostly anguished folk/pop/hip-hop and resonates well with my tortured soul. 😛

This is a pencil sketch from my sketchbook, with digital filters added. (I sketched this from a photograph, which didn’t have a source attached, but if I figure it out, I’ll post it here.)

Update: Here’s a nice, brief video summary of Ed’s career, created by James McConachie:

Oh Noes! Living life without art, isn’t living at all…

charcoal, sketch, boy, oh no

I’ve missed being here terribly. I couldn’t take it a second longer!!! So I thought I would at least say hello. 🙂 I’ve been working on a number of pieces over the last year and I’m gutted that I haven’t shared them yet. Life has just been very difficult and complicated. I’ll have quite a story to tell someday… Here’s my first baby step back into the art blog world…

Hope you are all having a marvelous summer!

P.S. This is a charcoal sketch that i did, with digital filters added to it.

Quoth the Ravenous Cat, “Nevermore.”

Nevermore – pencils and pen on paper

I made this Edgar Allan Poe mash-up illustration of my friend, fellow artist, and muse, Sean Fleming, for his birthday.  Check out his work here.

“Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door —
Only this, and nothing more.”

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow; — vainly I had sought to borrow
From my books surcease of sorrow — sorrow for the lost Lenore —
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore —
Nameless here for evermore.

And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain
Thrilled me — filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating,
Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door —
Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door; —
This it is, and nothing more.”

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
Sir,” said I, “or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping,
And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door,
That I scarce was sure I heard you”— here I opened wide the door; —
Darkness there, and nothing more.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortals ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token,
And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, “Lenore?”
This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, “Lenore!” —
Merely this, and nothing more.

Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning,
Soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before.
Surely,” said I, “surely that is something at my window lattice:
Let me see, then, what thereat is, and this mystery explore —
Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore; —
‘Tis the wind and nothing more.”

Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
In there stepped a stately raven of the saintly days of yore;
Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he;
But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door —
Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door —
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore.
Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou,” I said, “art sure no craven,
Ghastly grim and ancient raven wandering from the Nightly shore —
Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night’s Plutonian shore!”
Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore.”

Much I marveled this ungainly fowl to hear discourse so plainly,
Though its answer little meaning— little relevancy bore;
For we cannot help agreeing that no living human being
Ever yet was blest with seeing bird above his chamber door —
Bird or beast upon the sculptured bust above his chamber door,
With such name as “Nevermore.”

Art Studio Open House, Magnuson Park, Sunday 1/19

poster 4 art thingI just moved into an art studio in Magnuson Park that’s been twenty years in the making! It’s such an honor to be a part of this new community. I’m looking forward to building my career in this space.

There will be an open house this Sunday from 2pm – 5pm.  I’m on the ground floor. I believe that at least half of the studio artists will be participating. It’s a great opportunity to see this wonderful space the city has provided for artists, and to see some local work!

Use the gatehouse entrance to Magnuson Park at NE 74th Street.  Turn left on 63rd Ave NE. The studios are in the first building on the right.

Hope to see you there!
