Art Studio Open House, Magnuson Park, Sunday 1/19

poster 4 art thingI just moved into an art studio in Magnuson Park that’s been twenty years in the making! It’s such an honor to be a part of this new community. I’m looking forward to building my career in this space.

There will be an open house this Sunday from 2pm – 5pm.  I’m on the ground floor. I believe that at least half of the studio artists will be participating. It’s a great opportunity to see this wonderful space the city has provided for artists, and to see some local work!

Use the gatehouse entrance to Magnuson Park at NE 74th Street.  Turn left on 63rd Ave NE. The studios are in the first building on the right.

Hope to see you there!

Looking mad as a hatter…

Piano Time in Shoreline, WA is back!  While I didn’t have time to commit to painting a new piano this year, I’m proud to say that my Alice in Wonderland piano is out of hiding and has found the perfect home.  For all of August, Wonderland will be on display at the Richmond Beach Library in Shoreline.  I can’t think of a more appropriate home than a library!  Best of all, it’s art you can touch.  Visitors are welcome to come and play the piano. Unlike my cat, this toothy-grinned beast won’t bite…

Here is a link to all my Alice themed work, including progress photos from painting the piano: https://heatherunderground.com/category/alice-in-wonderland/

Piano Time – Alice in Wonderland – Piano Street Art Finished!

Heather Carr Alice in Wonderland street art piano mad hatter painting

I finished the Alice In Wonderland piano for Shoreline, WA’s Piano Time street art project on July 30th.  I did the project in under 2 weeks.  There are things I would have liked to add that I simply did not have time to incorporate.  And I ran into some trouble when I began to apply the varnish.  Despite priming, I still saw the piano stain seep through in a few spots.  UGH.  That was aggravating!  But overall, I’m thrilled with it.

I’m in awe of how much I accomplished in such a short time, especially because I’m really happy with the finished piece.  It took summer camps and grandparents in babysitting overdrive, for me to have enough time to work.  It makes a difference when I can work for several hours uninterrupted, and really get into the process.

below are images from the sides of the piano:

SInce the project ended, my children have both been home more or less full-time, and I’ve had a million ideas swirling in my head, but nothing has made it to a canvas.  It is killing me a bit… I may lose my head!  Believe me, I’m counting down the days until school starts!

the tea party and the piano closed (I had a design for the closed lid, but ran out of time – bummer!)  oh, and thank you to the Graphics Fairy for the vintage chair backs!:

Every time I’ve stopped by Central Market, I’ve witnessed impromptu concerts.  I’ve loved hearing feedback from employees and passers-by.  This project’s been so much fun! Here’s a little snippet of a performance by Beinuo Gong, who was returning to China soon after her concert.  Thank you, Beinuo!  (P.S. sorry about the squeaking grocery carts! lol…)

New Painting – Shows at Shoreline City Hall Gallery and Oasis Art Gallery thru July

Heather Carr Acrylic painting 2012

I finished this painting Monday, just in time to deliver it to the Shoreline City Hall Gallery (along with 9 other paintings) for a 4-person group show called Creatures and Places that starts today!  This painting, Better Watch Out,  is 16″ x 20″ on wood.  It says “watch out” in Russian on the arm.  I really can’t believe where it ended considering its earlier stages, which I’m not sure I want to share…  it started out as a goofy looking lion-like creature.   I liked parts of it, but… I felt like the images weren’t interacting quite right, the colors weren’t working for me, and frankly, despite the menacing figure in the background, it was just too happy!  It got worse when I consulted my daughter, and she encouraged me to add the baby lion in the foreground – which, admittedly, works compositionally.

I love painting with my Open Studio Group, but I only have this opportunity once a week.  I find it very helpful being surrounded by the energy of a room full of people creating, even if we are all quietly doing our own thing.  Creating in a vacuum is hard, especially when that vacuum includes two children who are constantly up to something, a house that desperately needs tending to, and a husband who is afraid to have an objective opinion regarding anything art related.  This is where bravery and going with your gut will get you to finish line.  I just started re-drawing, covering up and pulling things forward and pushing them back until I finally felt… not just content, but really pleased with my piece.

The underpainting for this piece was done at Artfest in Jesse Reno’s class, but this is as far  as I got before the class was over.  I did finish another painting in his class, which you can see here.

I hope you enjoyed seeing the process photos.  I wish I’d taken more, but I was too busy attacking my canvas.

There will be a reception at the Shoreline City Hall Gallery (on the 3rd floor) from 5 – 6:30 p.m.  If you are in the neighborhood, please stop in and say Hello.  The show will be up until July 27th.  This show features ten of my darker, macabre and emotional pieces.  Unfortunately, due to this being a public space, I was not allowed to include Flightless in the show.  Need to find a private gallery for that one…

My other show that is taking place now at Oasis Art Gallery in Wallingford, Seattle is the polar opposite of the one in Shoreline.  The Oasis Gallery Show is up until July 7th, and features many bright, playful paintings.  Unfortunately, they are closing their doors after our show, so come in while you can!

I’ll leave you with a few photos that my husband, Randy Stewart, took of my work at the Oasis Gallery.

Oasis Art Show and New Paintings!

Heather Carr 2012

I’ve burned the midnight oil ever since I returned from Artfest to get ready for my two upcoming shows.  The first one, at Oasis Art Gallery in Wallingford, starts Saturday.  I’ve been up late every night painting, varnishing and making prints.  I’m totally exhausted and battling a cold.  Guess that’s what I get for trying to have a second full-time job in my off-hours.  To make things more challenging, both my kids are on vacation this week.  Mommy really needing to write her blog post is not an acceptable excuse for not playing corner store by my son’s account, so during the day things happen in short bursts.  Well, without further ado, here’s what I’ve been up to!

I’ve been playing around a bit with abstract painting.  These will be up at the Oasis show.  Ugh, I just realized that I forgot to photograph one of my pieces, which I’ve already sent to the gallery. Doh!
