sleeping beauty fairy tale work in progress wip heather carrHere’s another painting that I have in the works. It’s Death carrying off Sleeping Beauty, or Snow White, or Juliet… insert poisoned/cursed/bewitched princess here. The prince/knight/star-crossed lover has just discovered her…  This one is pretty big. It’s being painted on un-stretched canvas. When it is finished I will mount it on a board.

We’re All Mad Here…

Alice in Wonderland, work in progress, Mad Hatter

I’ve been dying to share this work in progress! I’m having a lot of fun playing with it and watching it evolve. I still have work to do on every aspect of it, the faces, bodies, background… But I’m enjoying taking my time with it.

It is a portrait of me and my best friend, who is also an artist. It’s based off of an Alice in Wonderland doodle from my sketchbook that kept growing more and more into a work of its own…

Set Me Free

Set Me FreeEarlier this year I was involved in a group show. As part of the show, we were asked to create a 12″ x 12″ image around the theme: Set Free.

This became a traumatizing assignment for me because I had been feeling very trapped, stuck, immobile and longing to set myself free for the last few years… It was, and still is to some degree, difficult for me to wrap my head around what freedom would look or feel like! So, I decided to do a self-portrait that captured my anxiety instead, and my need to be set free. I may allow myself the freedom to play around a bit more with the images floating over my head. The shapes represent the logistics and puzzles that I need to sort out…

Trouble in mind, I’m blue
But I won’t be blue always,
’cause the sun’s gonna shine
In my backdoor some day.

I’m all alone at midnight
And my lamp is burnin’ low
Ain’t never had so much
Trouble in my life before.

Trouble in mind, that’s true
I have almost lost my mind,
Life ain’t worth livin,
Sometimes I feel like dyin’.

Goin’ down to the river
Gonna take my ol’ rockin’ chair
And if the blues don’t leave me
I’ll rock away from there.

I listened to the Nina Simone version of Trouble in Mind while painting this…

heather carr painting acrylic artists people walkingThis is my favorite painting from 2013.  It is acrylic and pastel on canvas that I mounted on wood. I’m so happy to finally be sharing it. (I am really behind on posts!)

This painting is a conversation between two artists. They are speaking in Russian. It says: жизнь – это искусство, life – this is art. I see it as a circular conversation, saying that life is art, and art is life. They are one in the same.

Visit Shoreline, WA’s Outdoor Art Pianos!

Heather Carr Alice in Wonderland Piano Flood of TearsIn case you missed my previous post, my Alice in Wonderland piano is on display this month at the Richmond Beach Library in Shoreline, WA.  And it’s outside, so you can actually play it!  😛  There are 11 pianos on display along streets and in the parks of Shoreline, WA.  A list of the locations is now available.  You can download a map and read more about the pianos here.

The pianos will be on display for all of August.  Hope you can stop by and check them out!

Come to Seattle’s Wedgwood Art Festival this weekend!

Spray paint on fingers bright colors fingerprintsHi Y’all!  I’ve been so incredibly busy since I returned from Portland, trying to get ready for the Wedgwood Art Festival.  Those are my fingers from Thursday afternoon.  See, very busy!  😛

Now I’m loopy because I still have so much to do before 10 am…. If you live in Seattle, please come by and say hi.  My booth is in the back of the space, along 36th Ave.  There’ll be lots of good art, good food, and good music!  I’ll have lots of prints for sale, as well as some original paintings.

Here’s some of the details:

July 13 & 14, 10 am – 5 pm, on the Hunter Farms Tree Lot at the corner of 35th Ave. NE and NE 80th St.

pencil sketch portrait heather carr Here’s a drawing that I did last week.  Just a wee sketch in pencil on paper, to which I added a bit of a digital vignette… It’s a portrait of my friend and fellow artist, Sean Fleming.  Sean is a contemporary fine artist in Dundee, Scotland.  His work is mainly figurative, expressed both as paintings and drawings.
